New Port Richey - A 27-year-old New Port Richey firefighter/paramedic was arrested by Pasco deputies early Saturday, accused of trying to strangle his girlfriend.
James E. McCormick and his girlfriend were arguing when he threw her around the bedroom, according to his arrest affidavit, and then grabbed her head and started choking her.
The woman thought she was going to die, according to the report, and scratched McCormick, trying to get away. The firefighter took her phone so she couldn't call for help and he wouldn't let her leave, a report states, but she finally got out of the house on Mystic Avenue and ran to a neighbor.
McCormick told deputies his girlfriend beat him up and he didn't fight back, the affidavit states.
The couple had been drinking alcohol prior to the incident, according to the report.
When the deputy arrived he noticed a red mark on the woman's throat and she complained of pain from where she said McCormick was holding her throat, the report states.
In his report Deputy Matthew Kadel wrote that the bedroom was in "disarray" and the woman's necklace was on the floor with the clasp ripped off.
McCormick was arrested on a charge of battery by strangulation. He was released from the Land O' Lakes Jail after posting $5,000 bail.
Reached by telephone on Sunday, McCormick declined to comment. City fire officials couldn't be reached for comment.

Paramedic that doesn't know how to choke somebody? Demote him to EMT, send him through school again. ;-{

Hope she doesn't resume the relationship. No one deserves that treatment. He must really be mentally unstable to treat someone like that.

Some women just aren't programmed to recieve and often times a good choking is all you need to get their attention. Some women deserve it, some don't and some enjoy it. Don't shoot the messenger, I am just stating the facts.

Abuse....they need to stay apart! Anyone who beats someone else up or does something like this needs to be locked up and be ordered to go for "real" counseling, not just something the state makes money on. Mental help should start while the person is in jail. I think that is a major problem, the people get locked up, then go to "classes", they need professional help not all the bull! The other person needs court ordered evaluation also, maybe they are too agressive themselves, perhaps abuse could be nipped in the bud! Too much of this goes on, that is where murder takes over in some instances!

Maybe he was just using this as a chance to practice his CPR training. Seriously, drunk or not he needs Anger Management classes.Emotions & alcohol not a good mix.

Why is it when a Paramedic's arrested and you go to the pasco sheriff web site to see the arrest inquiries they never show their picture? same with the one who was arrested for the money missing from the patients wallet. no picture of him either. why are their identities being protected. if you or i was arrested they would have our picture up there.

While it is VERY likely that he did grab her throat, it is usually the woman that initiates the physical violence. They are usually more verbally abusive and used to getting away with it by playing the innocdent victim after the incident...........I would like to know what she did to provoke the incident ?

I'm not saying I condone this type of behavior, but I understand. Women are blinded by the fact they think men won't get physical with them because they are female. Women can say and do terrible things to inistigate this behavior. It's 2008 and we have a black president elect, equal rights for men and women, times are changing. If it's somewhat acceptable for two men to fight each other, why is it so wrong to beat up a woman and why do they always get to play victim?

What a quandary. The boyfriend chokes her but then the EMT kicks in and he revives her then the boyfriend kicks end and her strangles her. He was a good EMT by using alcohol to sterilize her neck before the boyfriend took over. I would plead multiple personalities if I were him or the other him.

They are not legally married so there is no reason to try & work it out. The relationship is OVER. If he did this once then he'll definitely do it again and unfortunately it will get worse. He knows you got away this time, he wont let it happen next time. Perhaps she can move in with mom & dad for a month or two until she feels safe. Then start her life over again with a restraining order.

I think that it is time for ladies to start acting like ladies and take responsibility for their win actions. Far to often the woman intiates the violence or prolonges the confrontation with the belief that they will be looked at as the victim, when in fact they are the aggressor and instigator.Yes we do have woman who are battered, but what steps could they have takem to de-escalate the situation. How about, SHUTTING YOUR MOUTH FOR FIVE SECONDS ? and walking away ?

So the Paramedic has to post bond; why does another guy do the same thing the same night and get released SROR- own recognizence, right? http://www.pascosheriff.com/webapps/IMS500R.pgm?TASK=disp&rrn=000114387&rnd=99377 And I don't care what she said, no 'man' does this another person. These are not men...

This sounds like they both needed a time-out. Had they taken some time and thought about it this situation would of never happen.

Maybe she was displaying jealousy due to his stalking of other women. He can't stop. It's part of his job description.SHe's probably a cop or a paramedic herself. They intermarry quite frequently.
